Refuge & asylum

By signing the Istanbul Convention and other international agreements, Switzerland has committed itself to the protection of all women. Switzerland is not fulfilling this responsibility. However, the experiences of women as well as the observations of specialised agencies, volunteers and academics show that protection and support are urgently needed, especially for refugee women. In January 2019 the Confederation and the cantons also recognised this fact. However, the particularly precarious situation concerning emergency aid and deportations, as well as the shortcomings in the asylum procedure continue to be ignored.

What is needed

In order for refugee women to be finally safe in Switzerland a whole set of measures is needed. For example: lockable rooms and separate floors or buildings at the national or cantonal asylum centres. Regular mandatory trainings for all members of staff in the area of asylum. A gender-sensitive asylum procedure. Specialised support in situations of violence for all persons affected - independent of their legal status. Furthermore, the still precarious situation in relation to emergency support for asylum-seekers and enforcement measures need to be addressed.

What is Brava doing

Brava gives refugee women a voice with its project "voices".

Brava organises empowerment workshops with and for migrants, including for many refugee women.

Brava raises awareness in its trainings for asylum and migration professionals on the issue of violence against women.

Brava ensures through its political work that the Swiss asylum system will be more equitable for refugee women and that persons affected by violence will get the necessary support.

Brava makes the precarious situation of refugee women visible through its campaigns.

Brava tries to ensure/contribute with its easily accessible advisory service that refugee women and girls will get the necessary support.
